Assessing Food Safety Concepts on the Dairy Farm: The Case of Chemical Hazards AgEcon
Valeeva, Natasha I.; Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M.; Bergevoet, Ron H.M.; Huirne, Ruud B.M..
Adaptive conjoint analysis was used to elicit farmers' and experts' preferences for attributes of improving food safety with respect to chemical hazards on the dairy farm. Groups of respondents were determined by cluster analysis based on similar farmers' and experts' perceptions of food safety improvement. Results show differences in priority of the more important attributes. However, respondents in all groups valued "identification of treated cows" as one of the most important attributes. The results provide the processing industry and extension service with a better understanding of aspects that may form farmers' perceptions of improving food safety, and thus help to define the message for targeting different farmer groups.

Competitiveness of dairy farms in three countries: the role of CAP subsidies AgEcon
Zhu, Xueqin; Demeter, Robert Milan; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M..
This paper investigates the impact of CAP subsidies on the competitiveness of dairy farms in Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden. Technical efficiency results show that coupled subsidies have negative impacts in Germany and the Netherlands, but no significant impacts in Sweden. Decoupled subsidies negatively affect technical efficiency in each country and to a larger extent than coupled subsidies. Relative productivity results indicate that Dutch technology leads to the highest output, followed by technologies in Germany and Sweden. Dutch farms can improve their competitiveness by exploring their current production potential. Besides improving efficiency, German and Swedish farms may have options to improve their production technology.

Decoupling and prices: determinant of dairy farmers’ choices? A model to analyse impacts of the 2003 CAP reform AgEcon
Lelyon, Baptiste; Daniel, Karine; Chatellier, Vincent.
The reform of European Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in 2003 has resulted in substantial changes to the attribution of subsidies to dairy farmers. Moreover, dairy farmers are in also facing an unprecedented situation on the markets with the soaring prices of agricultural raw materials: they sell their products at a higher price (milk, meat and cereals), but must also cope with the increasing prices of concentrates. In this paper1, we discuss cross effects, on the productive strategy of French dairy farms, of the Luxemburg Agreement and the prices variations. A model based on mathematical programming has been privileged to determine how dairy farmers might re-evaluate their systems to identify optimal production plan. While respecting the principle of...

Effect of seasonal conditions and milk management practices on bulk milk quality in Minas Gerais State - Brazil Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Picinin,L.C.A.; Bordignon-Luiz,M.T.; Cerqueira,M.M.O.P.; Toaldo,I.M.; Souza,F.N.; Leite,M.O.; Fonseca,L.M.; Lana,A.M.Q..
ABSTRACT The influence of seasonality and the training and implementation of good dairy farming practices on raw milk production and quality was evaluated on dairy farms in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The physico-chemical composition, somatic cell count (SCC) and total bacterial count (TBC) were determined in 3,096 milk samples collected from bulk tanks originated from 43 dairy farms over a three-year period and correlated with key climatic factors. The recommended milking management practices were applied through a training program and correlated with the seasonal data in three stages: I) prior to training (dry period); II) 48 days after the training (transition period); III) 96 days after the training (rainy period). In the first stage, a diagnosis of...

Factors Explaining Farmers' Insurance Purchase in the Dutch Dairy Sector AgEcon
Ogurtsov, Victor A.; Van Asseldonk, Marcel A.P.M.; Huirne, Ruud B.M..
This paper analyzed the impact of farm and farmer characteristics on the acceptability to dairy farmers in the Netherlands of an all-risk insurance package and underlying specific categories of insurance coverage. The major farm characteristics considered were structural, operational and financial variables, while farmer age was the major farmer-specific characteristic analyzed. The specific insurance categories reviewed were damage, legal, disability, liability and health insurance. The results suggest that there are common and insurance-specific factors that can improve the design of insurance policies for dairy farmers.

Financial Analysis of Implementing an Anaerobic Digester and Free Stall Barn System on a Mississippi Dairy Farm AgEcon
Denley, Jonathan; Herndon, Cary W., Jr..
The installation of an anaerobic digestion system and a free stall barn on a Mississippi dairy farm is only feasible with the presence of a cost-share plan. A 60% cost-share plan is the minimum amount of support a farmer must receive in order to install both facilities.

Investing in Methane Digesters on Pennsylvania Dairy Farms: Implication of Scale Economies and Environmental Programs AgEcon
Leuer, Elizabeth R.; Hyde, Jeffrey; Richard, Tom L..
A stochastic capital budget was used to analyze the effect of net metering policies and carbon credits on profitability of anaerobic digesters on dairy farms in Pennsylvania. We analyzed three different farm sizes—500, 1,000, and 2,000 cows—and considered the addition of a solids separator to the project. Results indicate that net metering policies and carbon credits increase the expected net present value (NPV) of digesters. Moreover, the addition of a solids separator further increases the mean NPV of the venture. In general, the technology is profitable only for very large farms (1,000+ cows) that use the separated solids as bedding material.

STATE AND PERSPECTIVES IN COMPETITIVENESS OF ONE FARM TYPE IN SERBIA AgEcon
Popovic, Rade; Knezevic, Marija; Tosin, Milos.
In the paper is analyzed competitiveness of Serbian family dairy farms in lowland region in 2007, with some aspects of possible perspectives. Globalization process, expected EU integrations and set of free trade agreements will expose Serbian farms in close future to higher level of competition. Identified structural changes, refers on dairy farms concentration and specialization in lowland region in recent years. Estimated model of cost function revealed that family farms with bigger herd size have lower average costs of milk production. Economic efficiency, measured in terms of cost efficiency, shows that larger dairy farms are more efficient. But, not all smaller farms are inefficient. Due to good management some smaller farms are competitive on...

稲発酵粗飼料導入失敗事例の被害実態と経済損失額の推計 OAK
西澤, 成寿; 窪田, さと子; 志賀, 永一; NISHIZAWA, Naruhisa; KUBOTA, Satoko; SHIGA, Eiichi.
Rice Whole-Crop Silage (RWCS) has some benefits such as the improvement of domestic self-sufficiency feed rate and the solution of fallow fields, and it has expected to be contributing to the development of Japanese agriculture in the future. On the other hand, the farmer who had introduced the RWCS considered that the RWCS causes negative effects; a decreasing in milk yield and an increasing in disease of cow. In this study, we researched on one dairy farm which...
